A redesign is riskier than a new build. A new site starts from zero: it has nothing to lose. An existing site has history, ranked pages and inbound links. A badly prepared migration can wipe out that capital in a few weeks, and it often takes six months to recover it.
When a site needs rebuilding
- It no longer generates enquiries although it still gets visits: the problem is structural, not cosmetic.
- It is slow or unusable on mobile, where most browsing now happens.
- You can no longer edit it without an unreachable provider or an abandoned technology.
- It no longer describes what you do: the business has moved on, the site has not.
- It carries technical risk: outdated components, no updates, an expired certificate, a known vulnerability.
- Its address or URL structure is inconsistent, inherited from a tool that no longer exists.
How we run a redesign
01Audit of the existing site
3 to 5 daysA full inventory of URLs, the pages that receive traffic, the queries that bring it, inbound links, technical errors. Nothing is decided before that picture exists.
02Page-by-page decisions
1 weekWhat is kept, rewritten, merged or removed. A page that brings traffic is never deleted without a replacement destination.
03New structure
1 to 2 weeksSite map, mockups, content plan. URLs are settled at this stage, not during development.
04Development and content migration
2 to 4 weeksBuild, migration of text and visuals, rewriting of the strategic pages, markup and structured data.
05Redirect plan
Before go-liveEvery old URL points to its new equivalent with a 301 redirect. The plan is checked URL by URL before the switch.
06Switch and monitoring
4 to 6 weeks afterGo-live, submission of the new sitemap, monitoring of 404 errors, rankings and indexing. That is when oversights get caught.
Not losing your search visibility
Traffic loss after a redesign nearly always has the same causes, and they are all avoidable.
| Common mistake | Consequence | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Changing URLs without redirects | Ranked pages become 404s, traffic disappears | An exhaustive 301 redirect plan, verified before the switch |
| Deleting pages that had traffic | Outright loss of earned queries | Decisions from real data, never from intuition |
| Cutting content for the sake of design | The page loses the substance that ranked it | Rewriting at least at equivalent depth on strategic pages |
| Leaving a robots file or a staging noindex tag | The whole site drops out of the index | Systematic checks before and after go-live |
| Leaving two versions accessible | Duplicate content, diluted authority | One canonical URL per piece of content, everything redirected to it |
Budget and timeline
Between €4,000 and €10,000 excluding VAT depending on the number of pages to migrate and the volume of rewriting. A redesign usually costs 20 to 30% less than an equivalent new build, because the material exists, but it adds the audit and the redirect plan. Allow four to eight weeks. The breakdown is on the pricing page.
Have your current site audited
Send us the address of your site: we will tell you what is worth keeping, what needs rebuilding, and whether a full redesign is justified.
Request an auditFrequently asked questions
Not if URLs are 301-redirected to their equivalents, if the pages that bring traffic are kept and if content is not cut back. A dip of a few weeks during reindexing is normal; a lasting drop signals a technical error.
Yes, and it is strongly recommended: the domain carries the age and the inbound links. Changing domain is possible but requires a full migration plan and a longer monitoring period.
Four to eight weeks depending on volume. The audit takes three to five days, the structure one to two weeks, development two to four weeks, then monitoring continues for one to two months after the switch.
Yes. Useful text is carried over, corrected and restructured. Pages that work are kept and improved rather than rewritten from scratch.
Yes. The new site is built on a private, non-indexable address, and the switch happens in a single operation once the redirects are ready.
The average lifetime of a professional website is three to five years. A redesign should be triggered by a real signal (lost enquiries, obsolete technology, a change of business), not by the calendar.
